Aquahara combines power-to-gas systems with liquid CO2 storage to make green baseload electricity using wind and solar power, even in winter!
In summer, green methane is produced by co-electrolysis of water and carbon dioxide (CO2) in a solid oxide electrolyzer (SOEC), combined with a methanation unit.
The green methane is stored in the natural gas grid.
In winter, green electricity is produced by transforming the green methane to carbon dioxide inside a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC).
The carbon dioxide is liquefied and stored in tanks at -18 °C at very low cost.
This form of energy storage has an electricity-to-electricity round-trip efficiency of 60 %. And it has the lowest overall cost per kWh compared to any other system storing summer energy for use in winter, about 10x lower than storing the equivalent amount of hydrogen.
As an engineering office and system integrator, Aquahara is cooperating with manufacturers of the different components shown in the diagram above.
Contact us if you are a business customer with an annual electricity consumption starting at 500 MWh (around 55 kW, 24/7, 365 days).
